August 2013 – FBT Tax – Update
Those who attended the recent FitnessNZ road show or saw our recent email, will know that we have been working with specialist tax accountants to explore ways that gyms/trainers could offer products to workplaces involving exercise that are not subject to Fringe Benefit Tax.
At present, if an employer pays for a gym membership of a staff member, the employer must also pay FBT of 64% on any contribution they make. This results in most employers choosing to do nothing. We have developed a product which we believed exempt from FBT. We have written to IRD to get their opinion on this. While we had been verbally informed that IRD have accepted our proposal, and that what we have suggested is not subject to FBT, we have now have official confirmation sent through to us.
What this means for you:
First and foremost, gyms, exercise studios and exercise professionals will be able to sell an exercise product to a business in a way that is free of FBT. This is particularly useful when dealing with corporate packages or people who are self employed. This opens up and entirely new revenue opportunity for our industry.
What now?
While this exciting news is now within the industries reach, ExerciseNZ ask that you wait while we work on the documentation. This way we can ensure that you have all the information that you need at hand and as a member of ExerciseNZ we are ready to provide you will full support on this matter. As always we will keep you up to date on developments, so please keep and eye out for information in future ExerciseNZ updates.
